CHARACTER
Name: Rip van Winkle
Canon: Hellsing
Age: 70-something/ looks to be in her mid 20s
Timeline: Right after being devoured by Alucard.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality:
There are several facets to Rip's personality that are displayed in the short time we get to know the huntress before her death. She is childish, brutal, unhinged, manipulative and determined to defy her fate while accomplishing the task she has set out to do.

When we first meet Rip van Winkle she is singing to herself and loading a gun. She seems to be the very image of a soldier going off to war and anticipating the fight that is to come while displaying confidence mixed with talent and skills. She even seems to be relaxed despite knowing she has a very real responsibility to the mission. After all, who is going to trap the devil? Rip has been wanting another chance at Alucard since their very first encounter during the previous war. This is why she became a vampire! It was to hone her skills and became such a formable sniper amongst the ranks of the Letztes Battalion. Rip is yearning to prove herself against the biggest monster in existence. She wants to do this for a chance to defy the fate she fears awaits her.

The Huntress is aware that on some level she will fail. The Major compared her to a character within a German Opera that had made a deal with the devil and then tried to con his way out of it. The Hunter in the Opera died at the Devil's hands. Rip took this comparison to heart and like her 'fictional' counterpart, made a deal to gain power so she could triumph where she failed before. Only this drove her determination to defy suffering the same fate. This determination shines through as she tries to fight against Alucard, using it to pull herself back from her initial panic and fear to fight. The determination allows her to shoot and to potentially tear her opponent limb from limb just for her own survival.

But, just as she's a determined soldier there is another more brutal side to the huntress that comes into play. Rip enjoys the bloodshed and war as much as anyone else in Millennium. Maybe a little more so than most. Rip takes pleasure in the destruction of the traitorous British soldiers. She is grinning as her bullets tear them apart. The Huntress views it as her duty to take care of such disgusting filth and to punish all who dare stand in her way. Her brutality as she dispatches the officers is matched only by her creativity on what to do with them once they are dead. Rip takes a little bit of an artistic approach and uses their blood to christen her new ship. She isn't bothered in the slightest in what she is doing. In fact, she is rather proud of her creativity.

There are a few other ways that she is equally creative. One of them happens to be with her words. Rip knew just what to say to made the British Officers hesitate and momentarily doubt their actions. A hesitation she capitalizes on after she made them realize just how monstrous they had acted towards their own crew. This manipulation is blunt, but effective for her. One doesn't expect it to come out of the mouth of a woman that is smiling and acting happy to see them while congratulating them on their accomplishments.

Then there is the side of her that comes out while she waits. When there is no fighting or a need to punish others, Rip can appear to be calm. She can also appear to be pleasant and sometimes childish. She can be seen calmly waiting for the right time to begin her attack and even calm on the helicopter ride over to the Adler. You could say it's her in-between state when there aren't intense emotions to motivate her actions.

When she is excited and happy, she can be found humming and singing. Even when the excitement finally starts she does not stop. Instead she begins to dance and toss her musket around like a baton once she fires her shot. This display would almost seem innocent and child-like if it weren't for the explosions or the weapon being tossed around.

It's her eager youthfulness that is completely opposite of most of the villain characters in the series. She acts friendly and cheerful despite the destruction around her, even coming off as extremely childish and enthusiastic. It also doesn't help that she looks the part as well with a friendly face and freckles that lures her enemies into a false security before she kills them.

The very thing that drives Rip is her need to defy her fate and to prove herself against Alucard. She knows that she will probably die and that doesn't stop her. It makes her determined to do everything in her power to change that. You could also say that her bloodlust is a major driving force. She has shown a love for brutality towards those she believes are lesser than her and not caring if they live or die, just that she can have fun dispatching them. This essentially makes her the perfect soldier to draw out Alucard to trap him. It also help's that her abilities makes it next to impossible to send anyone else after her.

As for her likes, you could say they are simplistic. Rip enjoys music, especially operas. There is something in the music that calls to her, helping her express the purity of emotions one could otherwise not attain. At the same time, she enjoys her craft which is hunting. As an accomplished sniper, it's not hard to imagine that she is rather good at hunting down wildlife and enjoys slaughtering them just as much as she does humans. Perhaps in more creative ways to spare the parts of the creature she wishes to keep for herself.

Now her fears. When Rip experiences any emotion, it's intense. Fear is no different. In fact, the intensity she experiences her fear can freeze her in her tracks, rob her of her confidence and leave her a crying, trembling little girl, lost and unsure of what to do. This initially happens when she meets Alucard on the Adler. She felt his massive presence and panics as he slaughters her entire crew. It takes her a bit to regain her determination and fight back, but when that fails, she falls back into an intense fearful state that leaves her helpless to the devil's actions, resulting in her painful death.

Rip fears being powerless to a monster more powerful than her. She fears her death by his hands but, because of the intensity of this fear, she ends up causing the very thing she fought to avoid. It's this reason that her death seems to be the most tragic out of the main Millennium's officers.

Rip van Winkle's history

Strengths/Weaknesses:

Strengths
Physically, Rip has been show to be rather resilient in battle even taking hits from Alucard with less damage than some others would have. Being a vampire, even an artificial one, she has enhanced senses. Sight, smell, hearing, taste are all affected though not nearly as enhanced as a true vampire but, definitely more than a humans. There may even be somewhat of an enhanced sixth sense as well since she was able to sense Alucard as he approached from a high altitude towards the Adler.

As for psychologically , She has been shown to be able to pinpoint a weakness in her targets and exploit it like she did with the British Officers when she asked them what it was like to kill their crew and condemn them to hell. It was enough to make the Officers hesitate and second guess their choice moments before she killed them. You can say she has the knack for getting under a person's skin if given the chance. Another psychological strength could be her lack of remorse when it comes to her own special brand of brutality. It allows her to decimate the enemies weaker than her.

Weaknesses
Now weaknesses. There are quite a few. For one, Rip can be easily overtaken with her fear when a stronger opponent with an oppressive aura approaches such as Alucard. Her composure goes out the window and she becomes a panicked crying child scrambling to get away.Eventually she does snap out of it but, it's usually to late to turn the fight into her favor by that point. Emotionally, Rip is not very stable often going from happy and almost childish to suddenly psychotic and mass murdering with little warning.

Physically, she has a sensitivity to the sun which is shown when she sits on the deck of the Adler in broad daylight with an umbrella protecting her from the sun and an alarm clock counting down the time to Alucard's arrival. The sensitivity is more than likely not as bad as a real vampires, but it is still a hinderance. It can be factored in that she has some kind of minor healing. Nothing more than minor wounds, burns ect. Anything that may cause permanent damage like say, loosing a limb and it's gone for good. She won't bleed out and die, but there's no regeneration of lost body parts. In other words, she heals like a normal human, just a little faster.

Another physical weakness is her eyesight. Rip is practically blind without her glasses so loosing/ breaking them would prevent her from doing most things. This is highlighted in the Dawn when mistakenly taking someone else's glasses in the confusion of an attack prevented her from seeing that Alucard was an enemy until he explained it to her. It can be reasoned her eyesight got marginally better after becoming a vampire, but not by much.

It can also also be reasoned that she has a sensitivity to silver like the rest of the vampires in the series are shown to have.

Abilities:

Abilities wise, Rip is an expert marksman which helps with her profession as a sniper. Those same skills can also be applied to hunting her prey whether they be animal or human. She prides herself on the fact that she can take down seemingly impossible targets such as shooting planes out of the sky with a musket ball. Which leads into expertise using a long barrel flint lock musket. It can be reasoned she's skilled with most, if not all, firearms but she has a strong preference for muskets. [Note: She won't be coming in with her weapon since, Alucard is the one last seen with it after her death.]

Another ability she has displayed happens to be that of an expert pilot. She is seen piloting a helicopter with her feet while she loads up her musket on her approach of the HMS Eagle. This demonstration speaks of years of practice with aerial vehicles.

As for her ability to control her shots, it's never explicitly stated whether it is actually her ability or technological in nature. Leaving one to speculate that it could be the talent she gained when she became a vampire and honed to perfection, much like Alhambra's card tricks or Zorin's illusions or even Luke Valentine's speed.

Rip can also sing, and loves to do so frequently to express her excitement for battle or just to express herself in general. Her singing can be comparable to operatic level talent [Whether practiced or natural is unknown] since she enjoys listening and singing operas along with old war songs.

She is agile and strong, able to easily take the recoil of her musket and has expressed an intimate familiarity with her weapon of choice while loading the gun without having to really look which speaks of years and years of practice.

The huntress has also expressed a limited awareness to the presence of others even going into a panicked state once she senses Alucard approaching from above. The closer and more oppressive his aura became the more she senses and begins to panic.

It can also be reasoned that Rip potentially knows how to speak three languages. German which is her native language, English which she has learned as a second language and potentially Portuguese since Millennium spent 50 years hiding in Brazil. Of these three languages, German and Portuguese would be her strongest since she's had the most exposure to those two as opposed to English. Though when it comes to reading it can be assumed English would be her weakest due to a lack of English reading materials.

First Person:
[The pocket watch feed clicks on to reveal a slightly amused and somewhat confused looking woman. She turns the device over in her white gloved hands for a few moment before letting the feed refocus on her face. The last she checked she didn't own a pocket watch. So how did it end up in her pocket? Not to mention she vividly remembers dying]

I zhink I can safely say zhat this iz not Valhalla.

[Her fingers briefly brush the screen as she tilts her head and contemplates just what to do. He killed her and devoured everything she was. The Huntress remembered every vivid, excruciating detail. And yet, here she was. Alive and complete.

Which brought up questions. There were so many questions that needed to be answered but there was one that needed an answer immediately.]

Zo, zhe question remains, vhere am I? I vould simply adore it if someone could tell me what's going on before something horrible slips out of zhe shadows to gobble up such an innocent girl~. I speak from experience vhen I say it iz a fate I vould love to avoid in such an interesting place.

[At that she just smiles into the camera feed. If she was lucky, someone would respond and give her the answers she wanted. If not? Well, then it was time to do a little hunting and see what this little huntress can come up with on such short notice.]

Third Person:
Now, with that little question asked, it was time to start walking~. Rip slipped the watch back into her pocket and resisted the urge to grab for a gun she knew was no longer beside her. The musket had been her constant companion for over fifty years so having it gone was rather noticeable to the the woman. It was noticeable enough to make her pause from the compulsion she had to head away from the train station and take a quick look around.

It wasn't there. She knew it wouldn't be but, she still had to look. Rip's eyes went from where the train had been and suddenly pause. Hold on, where was the train? She glanced down the tracks and tensed a little. Why didn't she hear it leave? Trains weren't supposed to be that quiet. Especially not to her. Even the devil had announced his presence when he fell from the heavens to deal out her fate. A fate that she was a little relieved to finally escape even if it did mean she ended up in such a strange place.

"Vell, I suppose zhere iz only one vay to go zhen."

Not that she had a choice. Perhaps in her explorations she could find a tasty morsel to eat. A child perhaps. They always had the sweetest tasting blood. They were so sugary and innocent~. All she had to do was add a pinch of pain and fear and their blood tasted like a wonderfully aged wine ready to be consumed. Of course, she would have to make it last. Perhaps she could draw out the poor things death over a few days.

That is if she can find anyone in this place. From what she could see there was a fog surrounding the area. Whatever lay beyond it was a complete mystery for now and she was going to let it stay that way. The best course of action would be finding a place she could secure for herself. Preferably with windows that could be easily covered. Then she needed to find a weapon! She would prefer another musket, but any firearm would do in a pinch even if she couldn't toss them around like she could her old beloved gun.

Modern firearms were just so touchy when it came to things like that. One wrong placement of a hand and you were taking out your own men instead of the enemy! That was something she wanted to avoid. Unless, of course, this place was filled with nothing by enemies. In that case she would let the gun misfire as much as possible while she tossed it around. That would show the filthy creatures who to fear if they tried anything with her. If anything attacked her, Rip would be more than thrilled to take them down and tear the creature limb from bloody limb. Gun or no gun, Rip was dangerous and she knew it.

Just as long as she didn't run into someone like Alucard again.

The thought of the hellish devil lurking in the shadows made Rip shiver. She glanced around, taking careful note to see if they moved in any unnatural way. So far it didn't seem so. She wasn't sensing that terrifying presence and that was a much welcomed relief to her. Perhaps this was the afterlife after all.

There was really only one way to find out. Rip had to find someone and ask.
